Research in the Pasterkamp lab focuses on understanding 1) the signaling events and molecular mechanisms involved in the development of neuronal connections, and 2) the molecular mechanisms underlying changes in or loss of neuronal connectivity during neurological disease (in particular motor neuron disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and epilepsy). This research concentrates on mouse models and humanized cell models (iPSC, organoids) using an integrated approach involving molecular cell biology, neuroanatomy, (in vivo) functional proteomics, microscopy, genome editing, and mouse genetics.

The Pasterkamp lab is embedded in the Department of Translational Neuroscience of the University Medical Center Utrecht and the Brain Center Rudolf Magnus. It participates in Regenerative Medicine Utrecht (RMU) and the UU strategic theme 'Dynamics of Youth'. Work in the lab is financially supported by grants from different agencies including the ALS Stichting, Prinses Beatrix Spierfonds, Epilepsiefonds, European Union, UU and a NWO VICI grant.

Jeroen Pasterkamp coordinates the BCRM iPSC training facility and the MIND facility for 3D neural tissue modelling and light sheet imaging.
